What are varicose veins?
Varicose veins by definition are permanently widened superficial veins that no longer perform properly as a result of insufficiency of the veins' valves and weakening of elasticity of the superficial vein walls. Appearance of varicose veins is a sign of a development of chronic venous incompetence. Varicose veins of lower limbs are, unfortunately, an evidence of a progressive and irreversible illness. Undoubtedly it is both a serious health problem and - what is most visible - an aesthetic one.
Causes:
There are a few factors that contribute to the development of varicose veins:
· heredity - family history
· incorrect hygiene - lack of exercise
· prolonged standing or sitting
· hormonal changes, birth control pills as well as pregnancy
· obesity
· smoking
So, occupational and lifestyle factors may increase susceptibility to the condition.
Prevention:
The aim of prevention in the early stage of varicosity is the improvement of blood flow from the legs upwards to the heart and the strengthening of the vein walls.
So:
· exercises
· compression articles (support stockings)
· phlebitis medications
may delay the development of the illness.
Complications:
In many cases varicose veins do not cause any complications. Nevertheless it happens that they are causing inflammatory conditions, which become visible as a painful callosity with the redness of the skin. Consequently it may progress to the inflammation of veins and to dangerous in consequences closing of vein by a vein clot, what is called thrombosis. A clot may break away from the vein wall and travel by blood circulation to the lungs causing death or disability.
Varicose veins may also result in very difficult to treat venous ulcers, which may cause disability.
